Dos Pueblos at Rio Mesa Game

Dos Pueblos Chargers (0-4)
at
Rio Mesa Spartans (2-1)

This looked to be an easy game on paper but the Chargers have a quality running back, are the defending Channel League Champions and we are not moving the ball anywhere close to how we need to in order to contend for a Pacific View League crown.

It was definitely not easy to say the least!

#23 Dos Pueblos RB Josh Bartley

He was as good as advertised, rushing 23 times for 120 yards and a second quarter TD that gave the Chargers a 7-0 advantage at halftime.

The Spartan offense continued to struggle in the first 24 minutes with only two first downs and no points.

#7 Rio Mesa QB Trent Thornton

Trent led a much improved second half Spartan charge that included nine first downs. On the night, Trent was 11 of 17 passing for 128 yards.

Jordan Nunnery Finds Paydirt

This 2 yard TD run at the end of our first possesion of the third quarter knotted up the score at 7-7. Jordan led our rushing attack with 19 carries for 80 yards.

Better Run Defense

Although we did a better job vs. the run as the game progressed, we did get lulled into a nice play-action pass to their TE for a 47 yard TD pass in the third quarter as the Chargers took a 14-7 lead with 2:58 left in the third stanza.

Tanner Wrout's Physical Running Style

Tanner ran with authority down the stretch, trucking more than an occasional Charger. He finished with 10 carries for 54 yards and hauled in 5 passes for another 37 yards. His 6 yard TD scamper with 6:41 left in the game tied with the score now 14 all.

Battle in the Trenches

In tight games like this one, there is often an unlikely hero, i.e., someone who you least expect comes through in the clutch to turn the game around.

Tonight it was CB Darion Zimmerman's turn in the spotlight. Much maligned for his, shall we say, frivolous attitude, he made a nice interception when it looked like the game would end in a 14-14 tie. He was able to return his pick down to the Dos Pueblos 16 yard line with very little time left, setting up a . . .

Tim Dominguez Game Winning Field Goal!!!

We ran two plays and then ran the clock down to 2.1 seconds before using our last timeout.

Tim had to endure our last timeout, followed by Dos Pueblos using their last two timeouts to try to ice him. After some gentle words of encouragement, Tim hit an absolutely flawless 26 yard field goal to win the game 17-14 with no time left in the game.

Let the celebration begin!!!!!!

Our Two Heroes
#17 Tim Dominguez and

"ATTABOY!!!!!"

We're 3-1, HATS UP!!!

For the second week in a row we pulled out a win late in the fourth quarter.
